The Right Track: Trump won. Can I gloat now?

Donald Trump has been president-elect for a little more than a week. Between us: Can I gloat a little now?
I’ve refrained from a victory dance until now because it didn’t seem right.
As I’ve written in columns for USA TODAY, I’ve had a lot of issues with Trump. His character is lacking; his legal woes are troubling. Even watching him choose his Cabinet members is a bit of a rollercoaster. I like some, but don’t care for others.
What I can predict for sure, is that Trump will be unpredictable.
At my core, I’m a proud conservative. I love my country. The nation was founded on conservative principles and functions at its best when they are implemented.
That means Americans thrive when they are free to live, work and worship as they see fit. And when their taxes are low and their government is less intrusive, so that they can operate businesses, enjoy their families and friends and live as they please.
I hope Trump will choose Cabinet members and an inner circle who will help him achieve this goal. It will not be easy because the Republican Party has been misguided for a long time.
This week, my colleague Ingrid Jacques wrote an excellent column about one of the people Trump has chosen to make our federal government more efficient: Texan and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. With Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk plans to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency.”
I’ve never read a more incredible sentence.
If Trump, with Musk and Ramaswamy’s help, can bring efficiency to the bloated and wasteful federal government, he will be well on his way to being a success. I also hope Trump can curb inflation and end the war between Ukraine and Russia and halt Hamas’ terrorism of Israel.
My latest: Trump can fix what Biden broke. But he needs to seize the moment and stay on task.
If he does these things, Trump will not only make history, but he will steer America back toward its founding principles. Principles that made America what it is.
Am I happy America picked Trump?
I am happy a Republican won. And I will be even happier if Trump is able to make much-needed changes in our economy, foreign relations and government efficiency.
If that happens, everyone should do a victory dance. Even Democrats.
